Career Paths With an LLM Degree

LLM degree students typically fall into two categories: international lawyers who want to learn more about the American legal system and those in the U.S. who already have a degree but want advanced education in a specific area of law. Regardless of your reasons for going back to school to earn an LLM, you have a number of career options when you graduate. Let’s take a look at the jobs you can take, the daily tasks you can expect, and more with an LLM degree.

Career Options for LLM Students

As an LLM student, the most obvious (and popular) option for a job when you graduate is to continue practicing law. An LLM may enhance knowledge about a specific part of the law – it’s a complicated industry! If you’re a foreign student, an LLM also prepares you for practicing law in the United States. Laws in this country are likely much different and you have to learn an entirely new legal system. But going back to practicing law is not your only option. You could also go into teaching law or legal research. Some LLM students also work full-time as writers, publishing books about their specialties or writing course material for future LLM students.

Job Duties for LLM Degree Holders

The job duties for practicing lawyers, teachers, and researchers in the legal field are pretty self-explanatory. So, what’s the difference between having just a JD and going on to get a LLM? Essentially, with an LLM, you’ll be better prepared to work with specific clients on cases that require special attention. If you’re interested in becoming a partner at a firm or even going into practice for yourself, you can benefit from this advanced knowledge, as you’ll have a better ability to represent clients. Your daily tasks might not be much different, but you’ll be given an increased responsibility, working solo or leading teams to handle difficult cases.

LLM Degree Classes

What classes will you take as part of your LLM education? By far, this depends on your specialty, though you can expect classes that cover extremely specific topics and study real-life court cases. You might also take advanced classes in more general topics, such as ethics.
